One particular day, spouse wasn't very happy
I'm a simple beekeeper who froze bee frames in our kitchen and garage freezers. One particular time things got messy. Dripping honey, wax, dying larvae—my wife was not happy. The problem was clear: one, I was in the dog-house and two, beekeepers didn't have a proper solution for storing frozen frames. We were all improvising with Saran Wrap or garbage bags because ziplock bags simply weren't made large enough to properly fit a frame.
The Solution
My oldest son was a senior in high school taking an entrepreneurial class at the time, and I presented him with an idea. I asked him to visit stores like Lowe's, Target, and Walmart to study how other companies were marketing their ziplock bags—what messages they were sending, how they positioned themselves, what graphics they used. Then he designed his first box based on what he learned. He and his mother tweaked it, and we pulled out the elements we liked.
Building the Idea
But here's where it got interesting. I handed him a hundred and fifty dollars and said, go to Fiverr and Upwork (online talent sites) and hire as many designers as you can to help you create something even better. He wasn't expecting that part. Suddenly he was managing a small design team. He worked with about five people, we pulled together the elements we liked best, and then he hired the designer we thought was strongest to bring it all together. That's how a high school senior ended up designing a professional product.
Manufacturing and Refinement
From there, we moved into manufacturing. We found manufacturers through business connections and launched our first iteration. Based upon customer feedback, we improved it about a year later by adding a zipper. A year after that, we improved the zipper and switched from a white closure to blue so we could tell the difference at a glance.
Where We Are Now
We've sold direct on Amazon since launching FreezeFrame. Along the way we've been strongly supported by online bee supply sites like Better Bee and Central Bee Supply (and others). FreezeFrame storage bags can be found at many local bee supply shops too.
We're fortunate to fill such a niche within the beekeeping community. In 2025, we finally showed off FreezeFrame alongside our QuickFrame colored polymer sidebar frames at NAHBE in Louisville, Kentucky. We've met a lot of new friends along the way, and we enjoy telling the backstory—as well as where my son is today.
Actually, we have three boys and they've all helped out. As of 2026, the oldest has graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in Industrial Systems Engineering (no surprise there). The middle son attends NYU and is studying Computer Science, AI, and Business. The youngest still helps out around the warehouse and is navigating his last two years of high school, figuring out what to study at college.
